Aaron Rai Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.

The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie putt from just over eight foot to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off victory over the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Excitement

The champion started the last day with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

The challenger edged one shot ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final green.

Playoff Climax

This set up a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better individual. To play with him the last two days was really special,” stated the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”

Notable Performances

The Danish golfer fired six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of topping the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Mansell produced an superb final-round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
