Automobiles in German Town Found Marked with Nazi Symbols in Human Blood, Police Confirm

Incident location Affected vehicle Area Law Enforcement
Police reported they were contacted by a man who found a car in Hanau covered with reddish liquid

Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.

Law enforcement say they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.

The substance had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Police then located many other vandalized cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state initial examinations show the substance was probably human blood.

"Currently there is no indication as to its source; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.

City officials said they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for tips.

A high-ranking political figure stated the incident rendered him without words and had to be resolved promptly.

"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in 2020.
