Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen people sustained injuries in a seemingly premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the residence close to the city of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were taken into custody at the location and a third person who fled subsequent to the blast was found shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.

The blast could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the area displayed the property left as a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The leader of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, explained the residence was under an court order due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the family members who had locked themselves into the home. When the police reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the siblings triggered the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Commander Papagno told news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation immediately struck our officers,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

He believed the blast had occurred on a level above the doorway and stated to reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told Italian media, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto united with other elected representatives in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the service of their country.
