State officials confirmed a minimum of 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Access ways continue shut across the area.

Gang Growth

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.

Rio's police said more than 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were captured in the mission, together with multiple guns.

Many of the individuals are thought to be affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.

Broader Context

Major law enforcement actions are frequent in Brazil prior to significant global gatherings in the South American nation.

The international environmental meeting COP30 is set to occur in the northern urban center in the eleventh month.
